Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the world’s most iconic queer cultural institutions.
Now in its 48th year, the rebrand took something the community was crying out for—joy—and made it a superpower.
This joy acts as a force for participation, agency, safety, and long-term value. It’s no longer an expression that’s only around for two weeks of the festival, but a platform that keeps the celebration going all year long.
The 2026 iteration is ECSTATICA—queer joy in all its glory; inclusive, outrageous, loving, defiant, collective and euphoric.
This is our party. This is our power.
Over the years, the festival theme has sat on the fence. Among them; “Free To Be” (2025), “Our Future” (2024), “United We Shine” (2022), “What Matters” (2020). While they were worthy, this name represents a return to something more subversive and from within the community—not just a placard.
ECSTATICA is glitter in our veins and euphoria as resistance, even inspiring Paul Mac—one of Australia’s leading electronic musicians and producers—to release his own take on the ECSTATICA theme based on his very first Mardi Gras experience (you can hear a snippet in the vid and check it out in full here).
